Entering MountainsIf you use the optional weather rules, situations can arise where the Dwarf is unable to enter a mountain clearing. When this occurs, allow the Dwarf to enter a mountain clearing by using all of his basic phases if he would be otherwise unable to enter the clearing. For example, if it takes four phases to enter mountains, and the Dwarf only has three basic phases, his cost to enter a mountain then becomes three phases. NOTES: I just can't picture the Dwarf being blocked by snow, etc. when a Level 1 Woods Girl is not! Contributed by Jay Richardson. COMMENTS: If the season is snow and the weather is clear, NO ONE can enter a mountain clearing without riding a horse or something. Why not give the Dwarf all the phases everyone else gets and make him record one extra move phase to enter any clearing? So normal clearings would take two phases, just like a mountain clearing to anyone else. And Mountain clearings would take 3 phases to enter. Actually it is ICE and clear/Cold where no one can enter a mountain clearing, but I did overlook this when I wrote the rule... I thought the other characters were never prevented from entering a mountain clearing by weather. This messes up the "low-gear" idea below, also. Making him record an extra Move phase to enter any clearing would still leave him blocked in some cases when the others are not (Ice/Ice Storm) and would really penalize him when he has sheltered phases available. -Jay Making the Dwarf record one extra move phase to enter any clearing severely hampers the Dwarf's cave movement. If you then waive this penalty for caves, the Dwarf gets "stuck" in slow motion when he wants to exit a cave. See Clever Productive Dwarf optional rule for a solution. ~DS ...add a comment here... 'Low-Gear' Movement: Each Move phase treated as 2 consecutive identical Move phasesHere's a thought I had regarding the dwarf: The short legs 'advantage' could be thought of as a 'low gear.' So, how about this: each MOVE phase recorded by the dwarf is treated as two consecutive identical Move phases. Those legs may be short, but they don't slow down for a little steep slope. What is the game effect? Well, he still can't move fast accross the board, but he can move across the mountainous tiles more easily. And, he isn't paralyzed by bad weather, so is still playable in winter months. COMMENTS: I like it. But it seems like this rule would have to apply specifically only to mountain clearings, because it doesn't make sense anywhere else. Like you, I have often thought that the Dwarf's movement 'advantage' is a bit too harsh. Seems like this rule evens the odds somewhat. ~DS ...add a new rule here... |
